Campbell Field

For much of its history, Campbell Field was known for its natural grass playing surface and traditional concrete grandstands. The field developed a reputation for being exceptionally well maintained, and longtime observers considered its grass surface among the best in Kentucky high school football.

The most significant transformation in the venue’s modern history came in 2023, when Corbin Independent Schools completed a renovation project valued at more than $9 million. The project modernized virtually every aspect of the football facility and prepared Campbell Field for another generation of Redhound football.

The renovation included the installation of artificial turf, replacing the natural grass surface that had defined Campbell Field for decades. A new video scoreboard was added, along with improvements to stadium seating, locker-room areas and other infrastructure. New end-zone facilities provided additional seating as well as updated concession and restroom areas.

The renovated venue opened to the community in September 2023. The reopening coincided with Corbin’s celebration of 100 years of football, connecting one of the largest physical changes in stadium history with a commemoration of the program’s past.

The first varsity game played in the renovated stadium came September 15, 2023, against Frederick Douglass. Before an estimated crowd of approximately 7,000, Corbin defeated the state’s top-ranked team 6-0, giving the remodeled Campbell Field an immediate signature moment.

Although the surface, scoreboard and stadium infrastructure changed dramatically, Campbell Field retained the setting and identity generations of Corbin players and supporters had known. The renovation did not replace the history of the venue. It gave that history a modern home.

Friday night football at Campbell Field has served as a community gathering point for generations of Corbin residents. The relationship between Corbin and its football program has been documented across decades, with former players and coaches describing packed crowds and an expectation of success surrounding home games.

One of the most enduring elements of Campbell Field is the presence of former Redhounds. Players from earlier generations regularly return to the stadium, connecting current teams with the program’s history. That connection was especially visible during Corbin’s 2023 celebration of 100 years of football, when alumni representing multiple generations returned for the occasion.

Campbell Field also continues to host the Redhound Pigskin Classic, an annual early-season event bringing multiple high school football teams to Corbin for a football doubleheader and community celebration.
