A New Season Begins Monday: Corbin Opens District Tournament Against South Laurel

Lady Redhounds look to build on regular-season success as postseason play gets underway in Williamsburg.

The regular season is over. The postseason has arrived. And for the Corbin Lady Redhounds, everything they’ve worked toward now comes down to what happens on the court.

Corbin will face South Laurel on Monday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the opening round of the 50th District Volleyball Tournament at Williamsburg High School.

The Lady Redhounds enter tournament play with a 20–14–1 record, two regular-season victories over South Laurel and the momentum of a dramatic five-set win over Bryan Station to close out the regular season.

But Monday night represents something entirely different.

Previous victories won’t guarantee another. Regular-season records won’t determine the outcome. And with postseason advancement at stake, every serve, rally and point will carry greater significance.

For head coach Krystal Jones and her Lady Redhounds, the opportunity is clear: take the lessons of the regular season and turn them into a successful tournament run.

Familiar Opponents, Higher Stakes

Corbin and South Laurel are certainly no strangers.

Monday’s tournament meeting will be the third matchup between the two programs this season, with the Lady Redhounds looking to complete a three-game sweep.

Corbin claimed the first meeting on September 1, traveling to South Laurel and earning a 3–1 victory. The Lady Redhounds followed that performance with an even stronger showing on September 15, defeating the Cardinals in straight sets, 3–0.

Across those two contests, Corbin captured six of the seven sets played.

The Lady Redhounds finished district competition with a 4–2 record, while South Laurel went 2–4 in district play and enters Monday with a 13–16 overall record.

Those numbers suggest Corbin has an advantage, but tournament volleyball has a way of making regular-season accomplishments feel distant.

South Laurel has already faced the Lady Redhounds twice and will have the opportunity to make adjustments entering the third meeting. Corbin, meanwhile, will need to demonstrate the same consistency that produced its earlier victories.

The challenge isn’t simply beating a familiar opponent.

It’s doing so when the stakes are highest.

A Regular-Season Finale Worth Remembering

If Corbin needed a confidence boost heading into postseason play, the Lady Redhounds found one Thursday night in Lexington.

Facing Bryan Station on October 15, Corbin battled through five demanding sets before emerging with a hard-fought 3–2 victory.

The Lady Redhounds dropped the opening set 25–22 before responding with a 26–24 victory in the second. Bryan Station answered by taking the third set 25–15, putting Corbin in a difficult position.

With the match on the line, the Lady Redhounds responded.

Corbin claimed the fourth set 25–20, forcing a decisive fifth set that would test both teams.

What followed was a battle that extended beyond the traditional 15-point finish.

The Lady Redhounds fought through the final exchanges and captured an 18–16 victory to secure the match.

It was the kind of win that can mean more than another mark in the victory column.

Corbin faced adversity, recovered from difficult stretches and found a way to finish when the outcome remained uncertain.

Those are precisely the qualities that can make the difference during postseason competition.

And with a tournament matchup against a familiar district opponent approaching, the experience of winning a tightly contested fifth set could prove especially valuable.

Senior Leadership Takes Center Stage

For Corbin’s senior class, Monday’s tournament opener carries added meaning.

The postseason marks the final opportunity for these players to represent the Lady Redhounds in high school competition.

Their contributions were celebrated October 13 when Corbin hosted Knox Central for Senior Night.

The Lady Redhounds delivered a fitting performance, sweeping Knox Central in three sets by scores of 25–18, 25–17 and 25–18.

Beyond the final score, the evening recognized years of dedication, countless practices, difficult matches and the commitment required to represent Corbin volleyball.

Now those seniors have an opportunity to help lead their team through the tournament.

Senior players including Payton Thompson, Emma Wilder, Presley Griffin, Izzy Evans and Aubree Clemens have been part of a program that has navigated a demanding schedule and earned 20 victories entering the postseason.

Alongside younger contributors, including Shelbi Carroll, Annabelle Griffin and Tatum Strain, the Lady Redhounds have developed a roster that blends experience with emerging talent.

That balance will be important against South Laurel.

Tournament matches can turn quickly. A few mistakes can change the direction of a set, while a timely scoring run can completely shift momentum.

Having experienced players capable of remaining composed during those moments gives Corbin an opportunity to control the match when pressure builds.

What Will Matter Monday Night

Corbin has already demonstrated that it can defeat South Laurel.

The task now is to do it again.

For the Lady Redhounds, establishing an early rhythm will be important. Strong serving, disciplined passing and communication can help prevent the Cardinals from building momentum.

Limiting unforced errors will also be essential.

Against familiar opponents, matches often become battles of execution. Both teams understand one another’s tendencies, making consistency and adjustments increasingly important.

Corbin will also need to approach Monday with urgency.

The two previous victories provide confidence, but they offer no protection against a South Laurel team determined to reverse the season series.

Perhaps the biggest question will be how the Lady Redhounds respond if the match becomes difficult.

Their victory over Bryan Station demonstrated an ability to recover from adversity and perform in critical situations. Bringing that same composure into district tournament play could make a difference.

An Opportunity to Keep Building

Twenty victories represent a meaningful accomplishment for Corbin, but the Lady Redhounds have an opportunity to make their season about something more.

Tournament success would extend the season, reward months of preparation and move the program another step closer to competing for a district championship.

For the seniors, every additional match is another opportunity to wear the Corbin uniform.

For the younger players, postseason competition provides valuable experience and a foundation for the future.

And for the program, October is an opportunity to demonstrate how far the team has developed since the opening weeks of the season.

The Lady Redhounds have experienced victories, setbacks, close matches and difficult road trips. All of it has helped prepare them for this moment.

Now the schedule resets.

The accomplishments of the regular season become part of the story, but the next chapter must be earned on the court.

Corbin has defeated South Laurel twice.

Monday night, the Lady Redhounds will look to make it three.
