Football All Gas, All Hounds: Corbin Rolls Past Whitley County, 42–0
Six touchdowns before halftime. A running clock in the second quarter. Nothing allowed on the scoreboard.
Corbin put together a commanding performance Friday night at Whitley County, overwhelming the Colonels 42–0 behind an explosive offense and a defense that never let the home team find its footing.
The Redhounds improved to 6–2 with their third consecutive victory, while Whitley County dropped to 0–8. Corbin also maintained its perfect record against the Colonels since the series resumed in 2015, winning an 11th straight meeting during that stretch.
This one belonged to the Hounds early.
Five different Redhounds reached the end zone, Trey Person delivered two long touchdown runs, and Mason Salmons accounted for scores with both his arm and his legs. Across the line, Corbin’s defense kept shutting the door.
By the time the teams headed to halftime, all 42 points were on the board.
An Opening Quarter With No Letup
Corbin’s first touchdown came through the air.
Mason Salmons found Tayton Cox for a 19 yard scoring pass, putting the Redhounds ahead 7–0 and giving Whitley County its first problem of the evening.
Plenty more followed.
Jake Salmons pushed the lead to 14–0 with a 14 yard touchdown run. Then Person supplied the first of his two explosive scoring plays, breaking loose for a 44 yard touchdown with 3:41 remaining in the opening quarter.
Three touchdowns. Three different scorers. Corbin was already pulling away.
Mason Salmons added another strike with his legs, scoring from 20 yards out with 2:11 left in the first quarter. The quarterback who had opened the scoring with a touchdown pass now had a rushing score to go with it.
The Redhounds carried a 28–0 lead into the second period, having attacked successfully through the air and repeatedly on the ground. Whitley County had spent the opening quarter trying to find an answer. Corbin kept presenting another problem.
Person Goes the Distance Again
The second quarter brought more of the same.
Person broke free for a 48 yard touchdown run, his second of the night, stretching Corbin’s advantage to 35–0.
His two touchdown runs covered a combined 92 yards. Both were the kind of explosive plays that can change a game. Together, they helped Corbin put this one out of reach before halftime.
The Redhounds still had another scorer to add to the list.
Clay Akins reached the end zone on an 8 yard run, extending the lead to 42–0 and completing Corbin’s scoring for the evening.
Cox, Jake Salmons, Person, Mason Salmons and Akins had all scored. Five of Corbin’s six touchdowns came on the ground, with the opening scoring pass providing the other.
A running clock was already in effect during the second quarter. Corbin’s offense had done its work quickly and emphatically.
The Defense Finishes the Job
The big runs and six touchdowns provided the highlights, but Corbin’s defense made the performance complete.
Whitley County could not establish the offensive rhythm it needed to stay in the game. As the Redhounds added to their lead, the Colonels remained stuck at zero.
That never changed.
Neither team scored after halftime, and Corbin finished the night with a shutout. The defense maintained control through the second half, preserving the clean scoreboard after the offense had built its commanding cushion.
It was the kind of complementary performance coaches want to see. Corbin’s offense created separation. Its defense made sure Whitley County never had an opportunity to close it.
Another Step Forward
Afterward, coach Luke Salmons pointed to more than the margin of victory. He praised his team’s effort and clean play, noted that the starters played only two quarters, and emphasized that Corbin came through healthy. He also expressed confidence in the team’s improvement across offense, defense and special teams.
Friday’s performance offered plenty to support that optimism.
The Redhounds shared the scoring, produced explosive plays and kept Whitley County off the board for four quarters. They took control immediately and carried that control to the finish.
With a third straight win secured and a 6–2 record heading into the next week, Corbin continues to build momentum.
On this night, the Hounds left little room for doubt.
Forty two points. A shutout. And another win coming home to Corbin.
